March is International Women’s Month. In the Philippines, the theme this 2023 is “We Make Change Work for Women.” This theme aims to “highlight the empowerment of women as active contributors to and claimholders of development.”
Let us go back to the relationship between Jesus and women. In a society where women were often marginalized and excluded, Jesus stood out for his treatment of them. He saw them as valuable and worthy of respect, and he showed them love and compassion. We see this in the way he interacted with the women who supported him financially and how he revealed his resurrection to a woman.
First, Jesus had women disciples, and they supported Him financially.
In Luke 8:1-3, we read that Jesus traveled from town to town, preaching the good news of the kingdom of God. He was accompanied by his twelve disciples and some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Joanna, and Susanna, who provided for Jesus and his disciples out of their own means.
This is significant because it shows us that Jesus did not discriminate based on gender. He welcomed women as his disciples and valued their contributions. The fact that they were able to support Jesus and his ministry financially demonstrates the importance of their role.
Second, Jesus entrusted the story of resurrection to a woman.
In John 20:11-18, we read about Mary Magdalene’s encounter with the risen Jesus. Mary had gone to the tomb and found it empty. She was distraught and weeping, but when she turned around, she saw Jesus standing there. At first, she did not recognize him, but when he called her by name, she knew it was him.
This is significant because it shows us that Jesus entrusted the most important message in human history to a woman. He chose to reveal himself to Mary, a disciple who had been healed by him and who had supported him financially. He could have appeared to any of his male disciples, but he chose Mary.
In a society where women were often excluded from positions of authority and power, Jesus showed that he saw them as valuable and worthy of trust. He chose to reveal his resurrection to a woman, making her the first witness to this incredible event.
The relationship of Jesus with women was characterized by love, respect, and equality. He welcomed women as his disciples and valued their contributions. He entrusted them with important roles and messages, demonstrating that he saw them as capable and trustworthy.
As we celebrate Women’s Month, let us remember Jesus’ example and strive to treat all women with the love and respect they deserve.
May God bless us all!
Sincerely,
