This week, we are commemorating two significant celebrations: Purim, celebrated by the Jews, and Holy Week, observed by Christians worldwide. Let us explore how the story of Purim resonates with the essence of Holy Week and draws parallels that deepen our understanding of both.
First, God has delivered us from adversity.
Purim commemorates the deliverance of the Jewish people from the wicked schemes of Haman, as recounted in the Book of Esther. Despite the threat of annihilation, God’s providence worked through Esther, Mordecai, and the courage of the Jewish community to thwart the plans of their enemy. Esther 4:14 says, “For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father’s family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?”
Similarly, Holy Week marks the ultimate deliverance through Jesus Christ. In his crucifixion and resurrection, humanity finds redemption from sin and death.
Second, celebrate God’s faithfulness.
The festivities of Purim remind us of God’s faithfulness in preserving His people throughout history. Despite the trials and tribulations they faced, the Jewish community continues to celebrate God’s providential care. Similarly, Holy Week invites Christians to reflect on God’s unwavering faithfulness manifested through Jesus Christ. The suffering of Christ on the cross was not the end but a prelude to the glorious resurrection. In both Purim and Holy Week, we see a testament to God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promises and delivering His people from adversity.
Psalm 100:5 says, “For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.”*
Third, we are called to remember and rejoice.
Purim calls the Jewish people to remember and rejoice in God’s deliverance, as instructed by Mordecai in the Book of Esther. This celebration serves as a reminder of God’s presence in the face of adversity and the importance of unity and solidarity among His people. Likewise, Holy Week urges Christians to remember and rejoice in the sacrificial love of Jesus Christ. Through the rituals of Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Resurrection Sunday, believers are called to reflect on the significance of Christ’s death and resurrection and to rejoice in the hope of eternal life.
Peter 1:3 says, “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.”
May God bless us all!
