Greetings!
August 21 is a Philippine holiday in honor of Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino who was killed in the course of his fight against the Marcos dictatorship. His death subsequently sparked of what was called the “People Power” revolution that changed the political landscape of the Philippines.
In the Bible, the first Christian martyr as recorded in the book of Acts is Stephen. He was stoned to death because of his faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
What can we learn from Stephen?
First, like Stephen, we need to have an unwavering faith in God.
The life of Stephen teaches us the importance of having an unwavering faith in God even in the face of adversity. In Acts 6:5, he is described as a man “full of faith and of the Holy Spirit.” Despite opposition and false accusations, Stephen remained committed to his faith and did not waver in his belief in Jesus Christ. His unshakable faith allowed him to endure trials and ultimately gave his life for the sake of Christ.
Second, like Stephen, we need to be courageous in proclaiming the Gospel.
Stephen exemplified the quality of courage in proclaiming the Gospel. Acts 6:8 tells us that he was “full of grace and power, performing great wonders and signs among the people.” When he was brought before the Sanhedrin, he fearlessly shared the message of Jesus Christ and spoke truth to power, even though he knew the consequences might be severe. Stephen’s example challenges us to boldly stand for our beliefs and share the message of salvation with others, regardless of the circumstances.
Third, like Stephen, we need to have a forgiving spirit in the midst of persecution.
As he was being stoned to death, Stephen demonstrated a remarkable spirit of forgiveness, echoing the words of Jesus from the cross: “Lord, do not hold this sin against them” (Acts 7:60). Despite the pain and injustice he was facing, Stephen’s heart was filled with compassion and forgiveness. This teaches us that even in the midst of our own struggles and difficulties, we should strive to exhibit a forgiving spirit, following Christ’s example of love and mercy.
The life of Stephen offers us valuable lessons in unwavering faith, courage in sharing the Gospel, and maintaining a forgiving spirit in the face of persecution. May we learn from his example and seek to emulate these qualities in our own lives as we walk in the footsteps of Jesus Christ.
