Greetings!
Today, October 30, 2023, the Barangay and Sanggunian Kabataan elections were held all over the Philippines. All Filipinos are actually members of a Barangay, the basic government unit in the country. The name Barangay comes from Balangay, the boat that the Filipino ancestors used to arrive in the Philippines.
In a world filled with political tension and division, it is crucial that we, as followers of Christ, seek to make a positive impact on our government and society.
First, the officials should realize why God has established the government in the first place.
The Bible teaches us that government is instituted by God for the well-being and order of society. Romans 13:1 states, “Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established.” It is essential to understand that our participation in elections aligns with this divine order.
Second, Christians should pray and support the elected leaders.
1 Timothy 2:1-2 urges us to pray for “kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.” As Christians, we should pray for our elected officials, regardless of our political differences, and support them in their mission to govern effectively. We can also engage in respectful dialogue and constructive criticism when necessary, with the goal of promoting righteous governance.
Third, Christians should be active in community engagement.
Our faith calls us to be active citizens who fulfill our civic responsibilities. This means not only voting in elections but also staying informed about the issues, advocating for justice, and engaging in acts of service and charity that benefit our communities. We are called to be “salt and light” in the world, as Matthew 5:13-16 reminds us. Our involvement in what is happening around us is a way to live out this calling.
Let us all help promote a more just and compassionate society that reflects the values of the Kingdom of God. Let us remember that our ultimate allegiance is to Christ, and we are to be His ambassadors in all areas of life, including the realm of government.
