“The journey of Jesus to Jerusalem” – Seeds of Faith – March 18, 2024

Before the Holy Week, as we now call it, Jesus traveled from Galilee to Jerusalem. This journey is approximately 123 kilometers nowadays. During that time, it would take you 3 days if you go through Samaria, a shortcut but with danger. Jesus tried this route but eventually passed by another village. As mentioned in the Gospels, it took 4 days when Jesus arrived in Bethany, just outside of Jerusalem.

What lessons can we learn from that journey?

First, journey with intention.

Luke 9:51 – “As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.”

The journey of Jesus to Jerusalem was not merely a physical travel but a deliberate step towards fulfilling the divine purpose. Each step he took was with intention, knowing the destiny that awaited him in Jerusalem.

As we journey through life, may we follow the example of Jesus who lived life with a purpose. We should live out the steps towards our final objective which is to enter heaven.

Second, be compassionate along the way.

Mark 10:49 – “Jesus stopped and said, ‘Call him.’ So they called to the blind man, ‘Cheer up! On your feet! He’s calling you.’”

Along the way, Jesus encountered blind Bartimaeus, a man in need of healing. Despite the pressing crowd and the urgency to reach Jerusalem, Jesus paused to attend to Bartimaeus, demonstrating his compassion and concern for the marginalized.

Let us remember that our being busy is not an excuse not to help others.

Let us learn from the example of Jesus to see and respond to the needs of those around us, even amidst our own journey.

Third, visit your friends.

John 11:43-44 – “When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, ‘Lazarus, come out!’ The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face.”

In Bethany, Jesus performed one of his most astounding miracles: the raising of Lazarus from the dead.

This miraculous event not only displayed the power Jesus over death but also heightened the opposition against him.

The resurrection of Lazarus foreshadowed the impending death and resurrection Jesus which is the reason behind His journey to Jerusalem.

As we face challenges and opposition on our own journeys, may we take heart in the assurance of God’s ultimate victory. Let us remember also to be there for our friends.

As we reflect on the journey of Jesus to Jerusalem, let us be inspired by His example of purpose and compassion.

May God bless us all!

Sincerely,
