November 30 is Andres Bonifacio Day. Unlike the Jose Rizal Day that commemorates the death of the National Hero, this holiday commemorates the birth of Andres Bonifacio because of the controversy of his death — fellow Filipinos conspired to kill him. Bonifacio was someone who loved his country, and inspired others to do the same.
In the Bible, Jesus explained what great love is. John 15:13, 15 says, “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends….I have called you friends…”
We have to take note that Jesus did not ask us that we should die for Him. Instead, Jesus asked us to lay down our life to Him.
In John 13:38, Jesus asked Peter “Will you really lay down your life for me?” If Jesus would ask us this question, what will our answer be? What does it mean to lay down our life for Jesus?
First, laying down our life for Jesus means living out daily the commands of Jesus Christ.
Jesus said that if we want to follow Him, we must take up our own cross, deny ourselves and obey His commands.
Jesus laid down His life for us for more than 30 years. His death was part of His laying down His life.
Second, laying down our life for Jesus also means that we lay down our lives for others.
1 John 3:16 says, “This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.”
If we have Jesus in our lives, and if we know what true friendship and love is, then we are willing to sacrifice for others.
Let us go out daily and lay down our lives for the sake of Jesus Christ.
May God bless us all!
Sincerely,
