“Lessons from the Shema for fathers” – Seeds of Faith – June 20, 2022

As we celebrate Father’s Day, let ue ponder on what does God expects that fathers should do? In the Shema in Deuteronomy 6, Moses wrote down some important things that Fathers should do.

First, impress the commandments of God to their children.

This means that fathers should inculcate to their children the Word of God. It should leave a mark in their lives. It also means that the lives of fathers should make an impression to their children as they too obey the commands of God.

Second, talk about the commands of God when they sit at home with their children, and when they lie down and when they get up.

Fathers should find the time to be with their children. One of the most important topics that fathers must converse with their children is about God, and the Word of God.

Fathers must see to it that they come home. Fathers should find the opportunity to lead the devotional and pray for their children.

Third, talk about the commands of God when they walk along the road with their children.

Fathers must intentionally make time to walk with their children. In this way, they can talk about God and other topics that can help their children mature in their spiritual lives.

Fourth, write the commandments on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.

The Jews have a mezuza. Inside it is the Shema. They would touch it when coming inside or going outside their doors. This can be symbolically used by Christians as an example to put Bible verses inside our homes.

May our fathers continue to live out the commands of God in the Shema! Happy Father’s Day to all fathers!

Sincerely,
