March is International Women’s Month. In a society marked by inequality and marginalization, Jesus stood as a beacon of love, respect, and equality for all. Let us look into three key points that highlight how Jesus was a revolutionary advocate for women, drawing inspiration from the scriptures.
First, Jesus broke barriers.
Galatians 3:28 – “There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”
In a world where societal norms often dictated the roles and status of women, Jesus challenged these norms by emphasizing equality and inclusion. The verse from Galatians reminds us that in Christ, there is no distinction between genders. Jesus welcomed women into his inner circle, treating them with dignity and respect. The Samaritan woman at the well (John 4:1-42) is a prime example of Jesus breaking cultural barriers and engaging in meaningful conversation with a woman, recognizing her worth as an individual.
Second, Jesus included women in His ministry.
Luke 8:43-48 – “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace.”
The ministry of Jesus is characterized by compassion and healing, and women were not excluded from his divine care. In Luke 8, we encounter the woman who had been bleeding for twelve years. In a society where such conditions were considered unclean and stigmatized, Jesus not only healed her physically but also restored her to a place of honor and dignity. This act of healing demonstrates the revolutionary approach of Jesus, breaking societal norms to extend love and compassion to all, irrespective of gender.
Third, Jesus valued the voices of women.
Luke 10:38-42 – “Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
In a culture where women were often relegated to domestic roles, Jesus affirmed the value of women’s voices and contributions. In Luke 10, we see Jesus defending Mary’s choice to sit at his feet and learn, traditionally a role reserved for men. By affirming Mary’s desire for spiritual knowledge, Jesus challenged societal expectations and encouraged women to participate fully in the life of discipleship.
In Jesus Christ, we find a revolutionary advocate for women—a Savior who broke down barriers, affirmed dignity, healed the broken, and valued the voices of women. As we reflect on these three key points, may we be inspired to follow the example set by Jesus in treating all individuals with love, equality, and respect, recognizing the inherent worth of every person, regardless of gender.
May God bless us all!
