The current political situation in our country has raised a lot of questions about the character of the candidates, and ultimately about our future, and our children’s future.

The Bible has a lot of things to say reminders. Proverbs 4: 20-27 gives us reminders to give to our children and to adults as well. It could also serve as our guide in choosing leaders.

Verses 20 to 22 say, “My child, pay attention to what I say. Listen carefully to my words. Don’t lose sight of them. Let them penetrate deep into your heart, for they bring life to those who find them, and healing to their whole body.”

King Solomon teaches us the following things:

First, “Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.” (v. 23)

Let us ask ourselves if we are truly choosing leaders from the conviction of our hearts. We should filter what we put into our hearts because it will make the choices that will affect us.

Jesus reminds us in Matthew 15:19 “For from the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, all sexual immorality, theft, lying, and slander.”

Second, “Avoid all perverse talk; stay away from corrupt speech.” (v. 24)

Let us choose leaders who do not engage in perverse language. We, too, should not be engaged in mudslinging and putting down of other people through our words.

James 1:26 has this reminder – “If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless.”

Third, “Look straight ahead, and fix your eyes on what lies before you.” (v. 25)

There will always a lot temptations in this life. If we are not focused, then it will surely derail us.

Let us choose leaders who will not be sidetracked by bribes, and the glint of silver and gold but who will look straight ahead for the good of everyone.

Fourth, “Mark out a straight path for your feet; and stay on the safe path.” (v .26) and “Don’t get sidetracked; keep your feet from following evil.” (v. 27)

The only way that we have a firmly-planted feet is to make the Bible as our daily guide.

Psalm 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.”

May we choose leaders who love God, and follow the commands of the Lord Jesus Christ.
